Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform laboratory tests on patient samples (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) to help diagnose, monitor, and treat diseases.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring proper functioning and calibration.
  • Analyze test results and ensure accuracy and reliability of data.
  • Record and report test results in accordance with hospital or clinic protocols.
  • Follow safety and infection control procedures to maintain a clean, safe, and organized laboratory environment.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide high-quality patient care.
  • Troubleshoot any issues with laboratory equipment or test procedures and make necessary adjustments.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and laboratory accreditation standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP).
  • Participate in continuing education programs and laboratory meetings to maintain professional knowledge and skills.
  • Assist in training and mentoring new laboratory staff and students.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a related field.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by ASCP or equivalent certification (preferred).
  • Previous experience in a clinical laboratory setting is preferred but not required.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory equipment, test procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to handle high-stress situations and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic health records (EHR) is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work with various chemicals and hazardous materials according to safety protocols.
