ICU Nurse Position Summary 

As an ICU RN, you’ll operate autonomously in a dynamic and fast-paced unit, applying expert critical thinking and nursing judgment to manage complex cases. You’ll treat patients experiencing serious medical conditions, support long-term care goals, and collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams—all while guiding and mentoring other healthcare providers as needed. 

 

Primary Responsibilities – ICU RN 

Deliver Specialized Critical Care: Provide high-quality, evidence-based nursing interventions to critically ill or unstable patients, addressing both immediate needs and long-term recovery plans. 

Monitor and Assess Continuously: Observe patient responses, evaluate changes in condition, and administer appropriate medical interventions with urgency and precision. 

Coordinate with the Healthcare Team: Communicate and collaborate effectively with physicians, specialists, respiratory therapists, and other care providers to ensure optimal outcomes. 

Administer Advanced Therapies: Manage IV infusions, ventilator support, emergency medications, and transfusions in compliance with ICU best practices. 

Support Patient and Family Wellbeing: Educate and emotionally support families during high-stress situations, providing transparency and compassion throughout the care journey. 

Exhibit Core Nursing Competencies: Apply standards I–IV in alignment with clinical protocols and nursing excellence guidelines. 

 

Technical Skills & Core Competencies 

  • Experienced in processing electronic medical orders and maintaining accurate documentation 
  • Proficient in using and troubleshooting ICU-specific diagnostic and monitoring equipment 
  • Skilled in interpreting patient histories, lab values, and critical care charts 
  • Committed to maintaining safety standards, preventing errors, and participating in near-miss reviews 

 

Qualifications 

Licensure & Certifications: 

  • Current and valid RN license in the state of Texas (or compact license) 
  • BLS certification required 
  • ACLS, PALS, and TNCC strongly preferred 

Education & Experience: 

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred 
  • Minimum of 1 year of ICU or critical care experience recommended (new graduates encouraged to apply) 
  • Demonstrates excellent clinical judgment, multitasking ability, and strong communication skills
