Pharmacy Technician Job Overview
As a Certified Pharmacy Technician, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring safe and accurate medication preparation, dispensing, and distribution under the supervision of licensed pharmacists. This position is ideal for a pharmacy tech with hospital, clinical, retail, or ambulatory experience who enjoys working in a fast-paced, patient-centered setting. You'll support critical workflows including compounding, IV preparation, medication reconciliation, and inventory management.
Key Responsibilities – Pharmacy Technician (Hospital/Clinical)
Operational Duties:
- Support pharmacists with medication history collection and patient record verification
- Accurately prepare and label medications per physician orders and pharmacy protocols
- Compound sterile and non-sterile medications, including chemotherapy and TPNs
- Dispense and document controlled substances according to hospital and legal guidelines
- Train Pharmacy Technician I team members and assist in onboarding
- Maintain up-to-date patient medication profiles and ensure proper documentation
- Assist in IV room and specialty pharmacy areas such as operating room and satellite pharmacies
- Ensure timely completion of daily departmental responsibilities and records
- Maintain active IV certification and complete all skills assessments
Ambulatory & Retail Pharmacy Support:
- Enter prescription orders and select correct medications for new/refilled prescriptions
- Coordinate medication delivery and patient pick-up in retail and outpatient settings
- Participate in discharge medication programs and medication reconciliation efforts
Clinical & Safety Duties:
- Assist with safe, cost-effective medication therapy management
- Accurately read and interpret patient medical records
- Identify and report adverse drug reactions promptly
- Support medication safety initiatives and pharmacy quality improvement projects
- Participate in clinical interventions (renal dosing, IV-to-oral conversions, anticoagulation support)
- Provide drug information to clinical staff and patients under supervision
Workplace Safety & Hazards
- Properly handle hazardous drugs and cleaning agents, including chemo compounds
- Use safety techniques for lifting, carrying, and handling equipment
- Follow protocols for potential exposure to biohazards or sharp instruments
Qualifications
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
Experience:
- 3–5 years of hospital or clinical pharmacy technician experience preferred
- Must meet the qualifications of a Pharmacy Technician I
Licensure & Certifications:
- Registered Pharmacy Technician in the State of Texas (required)
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) preferred
- ACPE-accredited IV certification (minimum 40 hours) required for inpatient roles
- Certification not required for retail or ambulatory pharmacy roles
