Job Summary – Inpatient Pharmacy Technician
In this role, you will work closely with pharmacists and healthcare staff to manage the accurate preparation, delivery, and documentation of medications. You’ll rotate through key operational areas including sterile compounding, IV room, controlled substance tracking, and outpatient support, helping ensure timely care for patients across the facility.
Key Responsibilities – Hospital Pharmacy Technician
Medication Operations:
- Prepare and label prescriptions accurately under pharmacist supervision
- Compound sterile and non-sterile medications (IVs, chemotherapy, TPNs) following safety standards
- Assist pharmacists with obtaining patient medication histories
- Update and maintain patient records in pharmacy software systems
- Dispense controlled substances and maintain compliance with state and federal laws
- Rotate through specialty areas including OR, ICU support, IV room, and outpatient services
- Participate in daily inventory management, expiration checks, and medication restocking
- Complete department logs, compliance documentation, and audit records
Outpatient & Ambulatory Pharmacy Support:
- Process prescriptions for discharged or outpatient patients
- Coordinate pickup and medication delivery
- Assist with discharge medication reconciliation and transition-of-care support
Clinical & Safety Support:
- Monitor medication storage and usage per institutional policies
- Identify and report adverse drug events or reactions
- Support therapeutic substitutions, renal dosing support, and IV-to-oral conversions
- Participate in pharmacy-led patient education and quality improvement projects
Safety Protocols & Risk Awareness
- Use PPE and safe practices when handling hazardous medications and sterile products
- Follow infection prevention policies and procedures
- Adhere to safe lifting and handling practices to minimize injury risk
Qualifications
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required
Experience:
- 3–5 years of experience in hospital or retail pharmacy settings preferred
- Must meet standards of Pharmacy Technician I
Licenses & Certifications:
- Active Texas Pharmacy Technician Registration (required)
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) preferred
- IV Certification (40-hour ACPE-accredited or state-approved program) required for inpatient settings
