Job Summary – Pharmacy Technician Role 

In this role, you’ll work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist and support non-clinical medication-related duties including compounding, dispensing, restocking, and record-keeping. You’ll play a key role in maintaining medication safety and availability for inpatient, outpatient, and specialty units. 

 

Key Responsibilities – Pharmacy Technician 

Operational Support: 

  • Accurately prepare and package medications according to physician orders 
  • Assist pharmacists in gathering patient medication histories 
  • Compound sterile and non-sterile medications (chemo, IVs, TPNs, etc.) 
  • Maintain proper documentation of controlled substances 
  • Manage pharmacy inventory, medication stock, and expiration dates 
  • Train new technicians and support the onboarding of new hires 
  • Support medication delivery in various hospital units including OR, ICU, and ambulatory care 
  • Complete and document daily logs, reports, and pharmacy audits 

Retail & Ambulatory Pharmacy Functions: 

  • Enter outpatient prescriptions and manage fill and delivery processes 
  • Coordinate pickup and delivery for discharged or ambulatory patients 
  • Assist with discharge medication reconciliation programs 

Clinical Assistance (Under Supervision): 

  • Help ensure cost-effective, formulary-approved medication use 
  • Read and interpret medication orders and patient records 
  • Identify and report possible adverse reactions or drug interactions 
  • Support clinical initiatives such as renal dosing, pharmacokinetics, and IV-to-oral conversions 
  • Participate in hospital-wide drug education and quality assurance initiatives 

 

Safety & Compliance 

  • Follow hospital and state protocols for handling hazardous drugs and medical waste 
  • Adhere to PPE standards and safety practices in the IV room or chemo prep areas 
  • Use safe lifting and medication transport techniques to avoid injury or exposure 

 

Minimum Requirements 

Education: 

  • High School Diploma or GED (required) 

Experience: 

  • 3–5 years of experience in a hospital or clinical pharmacy preferred 
  • Must meet requirements for Pharmacy Technician I classification 

Licenses & Certifications: 

  • Active registration as a Pharmacy Technician in Texas (required) 
  • National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) preferred 
  • IV Certification (40-hour ACPE-accredited program) required for inpatient hospital techs
