Job Overview – Hospital Pharmacy Technician
The Pharmacy Technician works under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist and performs technical, non-clinical duties related to medication management, compounding, recordkeeping, and distribution. This role supports inpatient, outpatient, and specialty care settings, including IV room, OR, and ambulatory services.
Core Responsibilities – Pharmacy Tech Role
Operational Duties:
- Assist pharmacists in collecting patient medication histories
- Prepare, label, and package medications accurately based on prescriptions
- Compound both sterile and non-sterile pharmaceutical products, including chemotherapy and TPN
- Dispense controlled substances in compliance with hospital and state regulations
- Maintain accurate electronic health records and patient drug profiles
- Train new Pharmacy Technicians and support onboarding initiatives
- Rotate through specialized areas (IV room, operating room, satellite pharmacy) as assigned
- Ensure timely completion of daily pharmacy tasks and documentation
- Maintain IV certification and participate in ongoing skills assessments
Retail & Ambulatory Support:
- Input outpatient prescriptions and select correct medications for fills
- Coordinate delivery or pickup of medications for ambulatory patients
- Assist with discharge medication counseling and medication reconciliation
Clinical Pharmacy Support:
- Participate in cost-effective medication management under pharmacist supervision
- Interpret basic medical record information to support safe drug usage
- Detect and report potential medication-related adverse events
- Support clinical interventions such as renal dose adjustments, anticoagulation therapy, and IV-to-oral conversions
- Assist with pharmacy-led patient education initiatives
Health & Safety Considerations
- Follow hospital protocols for hazardous drug handling and infection prevention
- Use proper techniques for lifting, carrying, and transporting supplies and medications
- Follow biohazard safety precautions during patient interaction or code response situations
Minimum Requirements
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required
Experience:
- 3–5 years of relevant pharmacy technician experience preferred
- Must meet Pharmacy Technician I criteria
Licenses & Certifications:
- Active Texas Pharmacy Technician Registration (required)
- National CPhT Certification (preferred)
- IV Certification (ACPE-accredited or state equivalent) required for hospital roles
- Certification not required for outpatient or ambulatory settings
