Polysomnographic Technologist (Sleep Tech)

 

Position Overview:

 

As a Polysomnographic Technologist, you will conduct sleep studies to assess patients for sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless leg syndrome. You will monitor patients overnight, ensuring the proper use of equipment and assisting in the interpretation of sleep study data. Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct Sleep Studies: Perform polysomnography, including EEG, EKG, respiratory monitoring, and other assessments during overnight sleep studies.
  • Patient Monitoring: Observe and monitor patients throughout the study, ensuring they are comfortable and that all equipment functions properly.
  • Data Collection & Analysis: Record and analyze sleep data, identifying abnormalities such as sleep apnea, irregular breathing patterns, or other sleep disorders.
  • Patient Education: Provide patients with pre-study and post-study instructions, explaining the procedures and addressing any questions or concerns.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Set up and calibrate sleep study equipment, ensuring proper functioning before and during the procedure.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with physicians, sleep specialists, and other healthcare providers to ensure accurate diagnoses and effective treatment plans for patients.
  • Documentation: Accurately document sleep study data and patient information, following HIPAA guidelines and organizational policies.
  • Follow-up: Assist with follow-up appointments or additional diagnostic studies as recommended by the healthcare team.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree in Polysomnographic Technology, Respiratory Therapy, or related field preferred.
  • Certification:
    • Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) certification required, or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience in polysomnography or a healthcare-related field preferred but not required.
    • New graduates with clinical experience may be considered.
  • Skills:
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to interpret sleep study data.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a patient-focused environment.
    • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain procedures and provide reassurance to patients.
    • Comfort with handling and troubleshooting sleep study equipment.
    • Knowledge of sleep disorders, treatment options, and best practices in sleep medicine is a plus.
