Lead Nurse – Birthing Center

 

Position Overview:

 

As the Lead Nurse at the Birthing Center, you will oversee the daily operations of the nursing staff and ensure the highest standards of clinical care in labor and delivery, postpartum, and newborn care. You will collaborate with physicians, midwives, and other healthcare providers to manage patient care, support nursing staff, and implement best practices in maternal and newborn health. You will also play a key role in mentoring and guiding a team of nurses to provide exceptional care in a family-centered environment.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Supervision: Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of registered nurses and nursing staff in the Birthing Center. Ensure effective staffing, scheduling, and workflow.
  • Patient Care: Provide expert nursing care for laboring mothers, post-delivery patients, and newborns, including assessing and managing health status, administering medications, and providing emotional support.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with physicians, midwives, and other healthcare providers to ensure coordinated, patient-centered care throughout the birthing process.
  • Quality & Safety: Ensure that care meets all safety, regulatory, and quality standards. Lead initiatives to improve patient outcomes and enhance patient satisfaction.
  • Education & Training: Provide ongoing education and training for nursing staff to maintain high standards of care, including current best practices in maternal and neonatal nursing.
  • Policy & Procedure Development: Assist in the development and implementation of protocols, procedures, and policies to improve care delivery in the Birthing Center.
  • Advocacy & Support: Advocate for patients and families, ensuring they receive the support, information, and care they need during one of the most important events in their lives.
  • Administrative Duties: Oversee departmental activities, such as documentation, record-keeping, and compliance with hospital and regulatory standards.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN) or related field preferred.
  • Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of clinical nursing experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role, preferably in labor and delivery, postpartum, or a maternal/child health setting.
  • Certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required.
    • Advanced certifications such as RNC-OB (Registered Nurse, Obstetrics) or C-EFM (Certified Electronic Fetal Monitoring) preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
