Certified Surgical Technician - 1st Assistant

Job Description: The CFA provides assistance during invasive surgical and therapeutic procedures under the direct supervision of the surgeon. They are responsible for maintaining a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients/families, preparing and maintaining sterility in the surgical environment, providing quality service for each procedure, and communicating effectively with the healthcare team. The CFA must possess the knowledge and skills necessary for age-specific care within all surgical specialties.

Essential Functions & Accountabilities:

  1. Maintains a safe, comfortable, confidential, and therapeutic environment for patients/families.
  2. Possesses and consistently demonstrates a clear understanding of surgical conscience through preparation and maintenance of sterility in surgical environment.
  3. Provides quality service for each procedure through attentiveness and appropriate anticipation in the needs of the surgeon.
  4. Demonstrates positive professional verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
  5. Performs all duties with knowledge and skill necessary to provide appropriate age-specific care within all surgical specialties.
  6. Assists with the positioning, prepping, and draping of the patient.
  7. Recognizes the importance of National Patient Safety Goals.
  8. Actively participates in the departmental orientation process as a preceptor for new employees.
  9. Observes and reports patient’s condition for signs, symptoms, and unusual occurrences.
  10. Actively participates in preparation of assigned OR with team.
  11. Demonstrates proper identification, labeling, handling, and delivery of all types of surgical specimens and medications.
  12. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs.
  13. Follows established departmental policies and procedures.
  14. Actively supports the hospital mission of collaborative networking to satisfy community needs.
  15. Demonstrates comprehensive clinical competency in all facets of the CFA role.

Required Minimum Education and Credential:

  • Certificate Program in Surgical Technology or First Assistant
  • Certified First Assistant
  • Basic Life Support

Experience: Required: Previous surgical experience Preferred: Current experience

Preferred Education and Credential:

  • Certified Surgical Technologist
